OSINT for Event Security

Events concentrate people, attention and activity within a defined place and period. That concentration can create opportunities for disorder, crime, harassment and deliberate attacks. It can also mean that relatively ordinary incidents, including transport disruption, severe weather, overcrowding or a nearby emergency, have significant consequences on the event and its attendees.

OSINT helps event-security teams understand this changing environment. Before an event, it can identify relevant threats, exposed information and operational dependencies. During the event, it can provide early warning of incidents or changes affecting the venue. Afterwards, it can help establish what happened, identify people involved and assess whether any risk remains.

What Is Event Security in the Context of OSINT?

Event-security OSINT is the collection and assessment of publicly or commercially available information to support the safe planning and delivery of an event. Ultimately, security teams want to identify information that could affect the safety of attendees, staff, performers, speakers, assets or operations and communicate it in time to support a decision.

OSINT may help answer questions such as:

• Are any individuals or groups discussing the event?
• Have disruptive actions been announced?
• Are tickets, passes or credentials being sold fraudulently?
• Could another event increase crowding, congestion or disorder nearby?
• Are transport, weather or infrastructure problems likely to affect the event?
• Does an emerging incident require a change to access, staffing, routes or timing?
• Who may have been involved in an incident?

Events that require situational awareness may include a conference, festival, sporting fixture, corporate meeting, political gathering, product launch, awards ceremony, public appearance or private function.

The intelligence needed for each will be different. A music festival may place greater emphasis on crowd safety, drugs, weather and transport. A political conference may face protest, fixated individuals and ideologically motivated threats. A corporate event could attract disgruntled employees, activists, journalists or people attempting to approach senior executives.
